Ardath Templer: When the early Church was busy engineering this Jesus character to resemble the O/T prophesied messiah..he had to be of the House of David in order to fulfil this prophesy.. Clearly Joseph can't trace his ancestry back to King David..so they used Mary and her family tree.
Amina Motzer: You want to remove Mary from the entrance of Christ and that you can't do for out of women flows life and God would not have sent his only begotten son into our lives without goes through her and Mary must have been special I do agree but Catholics like to add her to their worship and I don't think God likes to share for I heard in tongues him say, "Worship me" three times in a row....
Alisia Sutphen: It says thought to be the son of Joseph. The first 2 chapters of Luke are through Miriams point of view so it shows that the line is Miriams. The line comes through the women and the Tribe through the man, just like Ruth came into Judah and her children were Jewish! . Numbers 27:1-11 The daughters of Zelophehad apply here as well
Rocio Karvis: Both of Jesus parents genealogies are in the Bible. This confirms that Jesus was a upper ranking Jewish Rabbi! As an upper ranking Jewish Rabbi Jesus could teach anywhere, anytime! The lower ranking Rabbis are limited to just their own synagog! Have you noticed that it was only some lower ranking Jewish Rabbis that hated Jesus and lied to get Jesus murdered?! None of the tens of thousands of regular Jewish wanted Jesus dead; they were for Jesus!...Show more
Tawny Grosskreutz: They also say Jesus is not the son of Joseph but if you study the verse you quoted it is clear that he is. Look at Young's Literal Translation or even the KJV if you understand proper punctuation. Not all of them claim that it's Mary's the group claiming that Matthew was written in Aramaic claim that it's genealogy is Mary's. They say Mary's father was also named Joseph and that is the missing name (three grou! ps or fourteen but the last group has thirteen names)....Show ! more
Ty Kirton: Well for one thing, I have been taught that the word used for son (in verse 23 for example) can also equally be translated as son in law. For another thing, Matthew already gives Joseph's lineage back to David (and beyond,) and although the lineage in Luke puts them in the same clan, there are differences.I don't know how scholars settled on the Luke one being of Mary and Matthew's version being of Joseph instead of vice versa....Show more
Sibyl Siwik: The mention of Mary is there when it is established in Luke 3 that she and Elizabeth, Zachariah's wife were cousins, daughters of two sisters, who were Levites. This establishes where the Priest line comes in for Jesus' ancestry, note that the scriptures tell us He was of the King line, (lineage and geneology of King David) and of the Priest line which established from Mary.
Maurice Breuning: 1) Why do Christians insist the genealogy of Jesus from the gospel of Luke is about Mary? It's ! an excusein my opinion, a VERY poor excuse with EXTREMELY weak grounds(but very easy to understand and to remember)used in an attempt to explain the differences between the genealogy of Jesus given in Matthew and the genealogy of Jesus given in Luke.Let me be clear: that claim was definitely designed for that specific purpose (to explain the differences between those two genealogies).2) if the author doesn't mention Mary, it says Joseph? One of the main reasons (but not the only one) that makes the excuse so weak.3) Where does Luke mention Mary? Nowhere in that genealogy. Those more well-versed in the excuse have equally-weak excuses for reasonable questions about it. For example, the common question- Why do you think it is Mary's genealogy rather than Joseph's when the author clearly identifies it as Joseph'sthey will respond with something like- Because of the marriage it was viewed as if Mary's father adopted Joseph and thus her genealogy was his genealogyor- It was custom! ary in that culture for the man to be mentioned even when speaking of h! is wife, and so the genealogy is credited to Joseph because he was the husband (and so sort of the owner) of Mary and her genealogyIn my opinion these excuses as a collection have, as far as I know, NO historical, literary or reasonable basis. They are mere excuses supporting the primary excuse which is used for the specific purpose already mentioned....Show more
Mark Hovanes: The words, 'as was supposed', are nomizo in the original language. Nomizo means 'in law', like how we say in-law today to mean the married into family, mother in law, father in law, etc. Luke 3 is Joseph's in-laws, which are Mary's family. You will see that both Joseph and Mary were born into the tribe of Judah, but Joseph's lineage is through Solomon, Matthew 1:7 KJV and Mary's is through Nathan, (which means 'given to service'), Luke 3:31 KJV. Solomon and Nathan were sons of King David.Luke 3:23 KJV And G2532 Jesus G2424 himself G846 began G756 to be G2258 about G5616 thirty G5144 years of! age, G2094 being G5607 (as G5613 was supposed G3543 ) the son G5207 of Joseph, G2501 which was the son of Heli, G2242as was supposed = word # G3543 in The Greek Dictionary of The Strong's Concordance.http://www.eliyah.com/cgi-bin/strongs.cgi?file=gre...3543. nomizo nom-id'-zo from 3551; properly, to do by lawIn Deuteronomy 18:15-19 KJV, God promised all the tribes of Israel, also known as the descendants of the 12 sons of the man named Israel, formerly called Jacob, that Jesus would be born into the tribes of Israel when they were too freaked out by Him in supernatural form.Jesus Christ was born into the tribe of Judah, through Mary's father, Luke 3 KJV, and in the tribe of Levi, through Mary's mother, Luke 1 KJV. King David chose God, so God chose King David and promised the king line came through David. The Levites chose to serve God, so God chose the Levis as the priest/lord line. This makes Jesus Christ, The King of kings and The Lord of lords, which is what Melchiz! edek means when translated. Melchi = King zedek = Righteous ones or Ri! ghteousness According to God's promise to the daughters of Zelophehad in Numbers 27:1-11 KJV, IF there was no male heir, then God's promise and heritage would pass through the women/daughters.God did everything He asks us to do, (Hebrews 2:14-18 KJV) and He fulfilled Genesis 3:15 KJV through Jesus Christ....Show more
