video games harmful?

Terrell Lawman: Like anything, they have the potential.As someone who has played and been exposed to video games since the NES days, I haven't gone on any rampages or become more violent.In the book Everything Bad is Good For You, the author makes a claim that popular culture, including video games can actually help us become smarter. He obviously doesn't promote watching TV and playing games all day long, but he makes the argument that a large part of video games is puzzle solving. Our brains get more of a workout because we have to solve puzzles while keeping track of everything going on in the game. The argument is obviously dependent on the game being played, but the idea of immersion and interaction make our brains work much harder than if we were doing algebra.In essence, video games can teach children the scientific method of problem solving at a very young age.But if all you do is let them play games, buy M-rated games which expose them to adult themes and situati! ons, violence and gore, allow the video game console to baby-sit your child, allow them to play popular M-rated games online where they can be exposed to a world of hateful racism spewing morons, then yes, it's harmful.So the potential exists, but it's entirely dependent on the consumer or parent....Show more

Video games could influence people to commit/mimic dangerous and violent acts, yes. But as I said in the second sentence, anyone with a brain can discern reality from fantasy, right from wrong, et cetera. Also, video games could become addictive i! n nature. Some MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, Runescape, and Final Fantasy XI Online can become so addicting that one could neglect their jobs, education, family, and personal health just to play the game. Also that would make you get fat and have a bad diet, and since you don't care about friends, you lose them and you become a loner (im not saying YOU btw, just people in general). I've been playing shooting games for 10 years and have never even came close to picking up a gun and pointing it at anyone or any animal. Yes you can get a headache from them but you can a! lso get a headache from not eating, needing glasses, your parents naggi! ng and running. You do socialize in most video games so thats not a problem. Honestly, the way I feel is that theyre playing video games..not hurting anyone. Anyone addicted to video games will be too lazy to go out...buy a gun..take the time to get mad at someone in real life..and then heaven forbid..go outside to get them.
