Bruce Calise: my car was not able to complete a smog test.....i have to do it again but i only have 2 days before the registration is due. I know i can pay the registration without having the smog certificate.....my question is how long do they give you to get the smog certificate after you pay registration? Oh, and iam in california.
Marvella Benward: Each state is different. Some states will not allow you to get your registration without a passing emissions test. Your best bet is to find your state DMV website and look it up.

They (the state) will actually appreciate you tardiness as they will (by law) tack on a late fee and a "this fee" and a "that fee", generally just feeing you to death. OH! And while all this time is elasping, you can 't drive the car without a plate. The quest is NOT HOW LONG THEY WILL WAIT but how long YOU can wait.
Porfirio Cahall: I assume that's what your state calls an emissions test.The firs! t guy that answered is right it does vary from state to state. There are several things you can do to help your car pass(I know it's not what your asking but it's helpful information).Have your car tested with a full tank of gas. Have your car tested on a clear day (as opposed to a hazy day). Change the oil right before the test.Make sure the car is warmed up before you take it for the test.Good luck...Show more
Janita Tetlow: It all depends on the state requirements, but most states will usually have a grace period of around 3-6 months.Contact the Dept.of Motor Vehicle in your state or for that matter emmisions testing they be able to give you the particulars. I hope this helps
