do i have to use quotation marks every time a character in my book says something?

Antone Bual: You probably should use quotation marks. However, if you start a new line for each person talking then you don't necessarily need them, and you don't always need the he said she said stuff. Like this: “So who’s (or who are?) Motionless in White” I said as he turned on the regular lights and turned off the strobes. "They're one of my favorite bands", he said (or replied). "Oh, I would’t know because I don’t listen to that type of music." "You probably wouldn't be into it." The reader can work out who's talking if you use he/i said just once. I also put in a few punctuation suggestions coz I'm pedantic :) I hope that helps!...Show more

Elissa Curlin: Yes you do. It differentiates from the author inserting a comment, what a character is thinking, and what they are saying. If you don't, you will confuse the hell out of everyone.Unless you're writing in Russian. They don't use markers for dialog like English uses.
