Lewis Ranft: Most shelters do not require a fenced yard. If they did, nobody in apartment buildings could adopt dogs. As long as the dog will be leash-walked often enough - and 5 hours is no problem at all for a full-grown, housetrained dog - there should be no problem. An overhead leash-trolley in the yard is a plus, but not essential as long as you are committed to walking him. Please don't think of an invisible underground electric fence. Those have turned many a happy, sociable dog neurotic and fear-aggressive with approaching humans....Show more
Myron Leftwich: A dog run should be enough to satisfy a property check - most only require that you have somewhere safe and secure to keep the dog when it is unattended. Of course, that depends on how big the run is. It has to have space for the dog to move and toilet, and it has to have somewhere to shelter from the weather. You don't have to fence your entire back yard - you could fence off a smaller, easier to ma! nage area for the dog. Fencing can be expensive if you have a large and tricky area to cover, so look at what is practical for your situation....Show more
Joni Ziak: If it has to stay outside, then maybe one of those rectangular wire fence enclosures you can get from Lowe's or Home Depot, though I really don't like them. We have a small dog run for our small dogs, with dog houses in it.
